What’s a winning World Cup strategy?
Well, us "jelly beans" think that cherry picking is the best strategy!

You lead off in shoot outs. What’s that like? You look pretty relaxed? Do you have ice in your veins or something else?
It is nerve racking because there is a lot of pressure on you, but soccer is a team sport and this years team is probably the most supportative and encouraging and it is great to know that nobody will be mad at you if you miss because they all know that you tried your best. I just focused and got into a routine during practices and that carried over into the games.

Favorite sportsman/woman of yours and why?
I know that it is cliché but there is a player on my dad's team that it very inspirational to me. He is a wide receiver who wasn't supposed to be a great player because of his size (he was tiny for a receiver) and this past summer he became really sick and lost even more weight but he fought back and became one of the most valuable players on the field and a great leader. I see him as an inspiration because as a defender I am not very big and I can get pushed around a lot but I can't let that stop me and still have a good presence on the field.

What’s one of your first memories of playing soccer?
I remember my first game, I was in first grade and at the time I had a neighbor who was very good at soccer and I always tried to imitate his moves so in my first game I tried to do a spin move that he did and I remember dribbling the ball around the entire center circle with all the coaches, players, and parents yelling at me, not knowing what I was doing. I learned that day that I was a defender.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received about playing defense in soccer?
Well the key to defense is being patient and letting the other player make the mistake because if not then you are the last person between them and the goalie.

You and your brother are both playing varsity soccer for East. Is there any competition between you two and how your teams are doing or any interesting tidbit about you two and soccer? (or alternate question or additional: That’s a lot of Spartan blue in the wash. Have you two gotten your blues confused?)
There definitely is competition between both of us in literally anything and everything. We both support each other, but there is definitely the competition factor, especially since we're so close in age. And yes, our socks get confused all of the time! I'm sure my parents will be happy when they don't have to wash soccer clothes everyday!
What have you enjoyed most so far this season?
So far, I think my favorite part of the season would have to be World Cup! Definitely a lot of fun! Amanda and I dressed up as biker girls!
Team needs a laugh: What comedy movie are you picking up at Blockbuster?
I would say rolemodels! A great movie that we'd enjoy as a team!

SR Profile: Kara Scheel

What’s #1 on your "bucket list"? (and why?)
I have a tie for number one on my bucket list. I would love to travel the world to experience different cultures and customs. And I have to see a John Mayer concert because I am a die hard fan.

What’s the legacy this team leaves for next year?
We leave behind our desire. Our team has the desire to win every game and the confidence that we can win every game. I hope that this carries over to next year.

A favorite moment of the season thus far? (on field or off)
My favorite moment of the season was beating Southwest. It was a really great win and it was an awesome feeling to beat one of our biggest rivals.

Do you think waterboarding is torture?
Yes I think waterboarding is torture. It is inhumane and I don't think that any method like waterboarding should be used to interrogate people.

Can you anticipate what you will feel walking off the pitch with this crew for the last time … what’s that going to be like?
It'll be sad to walk off the field for the last time. I have played multiple seasons (soccer and other sports) with most of these girls and it will be weird knowing that it is over. I have enjoyed every minute of this season and I don't want it to end.

Soccer Fathers: How are we to be there for our Daughters?

by Mike Scheel

I understand why we fathers get so upset at officials, referees, and at times, coaches when we watch our daughters from the stands. It is all about the Circle of Life. I think it is about something from way back inherited from when we were cavemen. It is something deep down about our role as fathers. We are there to protect our family, and to especially protect our daughters. We know that, but the world of our daughters just doesn’t seem to have gotten that memo. The problem is that our daughters no longer buy into this premise of us being their protectors. They see themselves as perfectly able to take care of themselves. And they have proven this time and time again on the athletic field and in the classroom. We fathers have had to reluctantly admit that our daughters are going to be just fine without need of our protection. And hence, we have no role as we sit up there helplessly in the stands observing our daughters as they deal with life, the defeats, the victories, and the bad calls. By the way, all calls that go against our daughters are bad calls, and all in their favor are surely justified.

I also know why every opponent that plays against our daughters’ team is the hated villain. The Lincoln Southeasts and Southwests are the Darth Vaders. Sure, many of them were teammates to our daughters and we rooted for them when they were younger and on the same teams. But, these other girls have gone over to the Darkside. Our Lincoln East girls are the ‘Force’ (of life), the ‘Human Beings’ as Little Big Man said. And the other teams, especially Southeast and Southwest, are the Evil Empire. We fathers know how to recognize our enemies, and we know how to protect and fight for our little girl. The only problem is that our girl (and her mother) tell us there is no need to fight for them, because they do their own fighting now, and do it very well.

We bark when our daughters are pushed in the back or kneed in the stomach. We wince when they fight to win a ball with a header contested by another opponent’s head. We do this instinctively because this is what we have always done. Yet, before, we were able to ‘spot’ our daughters like gymnastics coaches, so that if they tripped we were there to catch them. They would never get hurt under our watchful eye. We would let them take those first steps down the staircase knowing that it was important for them to learn, to strive for independence. But, we did not realize that this independence won would lead to this. This, being the situation of having to a look helplessly on as they absorb the punishment from a kick in the shin or the pain from a hard-fought defeat. We are ecstatic when they then dish it out to the hated opponent. And of course this is justified. And, we also share their joy when they are victorious, even though we have to admit that they did it without us.

We go home and look at pictures of our daughters as young children in ponytails and as beautiful women in prom dresses. So cute then, so beautiful now. We realize the progression of time, that they are no longer little girls needing our protection. We are so proud of them as they have grown into women and know that we no longer protect them. They have learned to do that themselves. And we are proud of that. Yet, we come back to the dilemma of ‘what is our role to be now?’ So we bark at referees, embarrass through our jeers of the other team. And after the game is over, we attempt to re-hash with our daughters to give them that extra bit of advice that will surely give them the edge when the battle ensues again on the soccer field. Of course, our daughters have trained us well, so that we know to not provide such sage advice openly and directly. Instead, we try to sneak it into brief conversations about the game. But to no avail, our daughters are wise to us, and again they give us the message that they do not need such advice, especially from one who still has not figured out offsides!

So how is a father to act? What part does he play as he comes to cheer on his daughter and her team. Hopefully we do not embarrass them too much, and hopefully they understand. And they seem able to see inside us to understand that we are their fathers. We love them, and we are only trying to be what we have always been. Time moves forward, and change is hard for fathers. Our daughters are growing up, and we are so proud and we love them so much. But it also hurts just a little to know that maybe they don’t need us to protect them any longer.

You inherited the "Juga bonita!" big wheel as a freshman. Explain this odd little tradition and what you think of it.
Well, this is a unique tradition for LEGS where each year a freshman or new person to the team gets chosen by the last year's inheritor(?) to receive the tricycle award for that year. It's kind of a cheesy metaphor for the new, small, child-like rookie who exhibits the most potential, improvement, etc. Also, during the year you have the trike (and you're not really sure what to do with it so it sits in your garage or attic) you must add something to it, often referring to an inside joke of the season.

What’s one thing you’d like to learn to cook some day?
Strawberry-rubarb pie.

One of your teammates says you wear your food. Are you going to take this? Defend yourself. Or not.
For some time I've been trying tirelessly to introduce food into the fashion and make-up industries. So far, it has not become trendy...yet.

Someone once said you wear two different socks because you don’t have time to match. Tell us the real secret.
When I was a kid I used to get these reoccurring nightmares. It was always a very stormy night and the power was out in our house. I would walk all through the house looking for a family member and finally upstairs I'd see a candle in one room. In that room was an 80-year old version of me...matching socks. Piles and piles of socks. I've vowed to never become that person.

How has this team changed since day 1?

Well everyone's shook off the rust that comes from not having played a good game of soccer in awhile, so touches have improved and passing and shooting. But also getting to know each other better, as players and teammates. We know each other's strengths and weaknesses on the field, and who doesn't eat their Goodcents cookie.

What’s been the most valuable thing said by player or coach that’s stuck with you?
Last year Caleb gave me a poster to keep during the state tournament. I hung it on the ceiling over my bed and looked at it every day and before I went to bed. It read, "Shoot. To hell with the questions." I think that's what it said, at least...

Saturday & District Pairings

Millard West @ 8:30 a.m. and Millard South @ 11:00 a.m.

A-6 at Millard South—Monday: Millard North (12-3, 44.2) vs. Fremont (2-11, 37.0), 5:30; Papillion-LV (3-10, 38.5) vs. Lincoln East (11-3, 43.7), 7:30; Final Wednesday, 6:30.

North on 144th St. , after the Harrison Street intersection, get in the left lane. 144th Street is a north-south street, but the street curves right before Q Street to the right into Millard Ave. It won't hurt anything if you take the curve, you will still hit Q Street and can turn left there, but it is more convenient to stay left, and go straight (staying on 144th) (I think there is a light there) and go towards the water tower to Q Street.

Superstitions? Yes, actually I am superstitious when it comes to things that I think are lucky for me. For example if I had a good game and I was wearing a certain sports bra or pony tail holder I will wear the same thing for my next game (clean of course).

Who is one of the people you most look up to etc.....
I would probably have to say my brother Trevor because he has love for anything he does and he helps me not to ever get down on myself.

If I could take the team on a dream vacation it would have to be a beach somewhere. We could line our lounge chairs up in a long row and have cabana boys come and serve us cold drinks. We have worked hard and have suffered through some pretty cold days so that seems like a perfect reward.

The rest of the season? What I hope for the season is that we make it to State and show people what we can do. I'd like to have a re-match with Southeast and kick some Knight butt this time.

My handle at Lazer Quest is usually something kind of silly and it changes every time depending on what kind of mood I am in. If I had to pick one today it would be "Punisher" because that's what I plan to do to anyone who gets in my way today . Haha.

There is so much about the game of soccer that I love and I have played for so long I guess I couldn't see myself not playing. I think the main thing I l ove about it is the satisfaction of working together as a team to score goals and beating teams like Southwest!

My favorite memories of the season so far have to be the night of kidnapping and our crazy rave. haha.

Blue rules the day, improves to 10-3

APRIL 25--The game of the day was with North Platte, and despite 14 shots on goal and four corner kicks, East found itself scoreless and in a shoot-out. Deja-vu. Morgan Bohl came through for the second year in a row versus the same team, eighth shooter and she buries the winner. The Bulldogs got the last taste of frustration for the second year in a row. Kearney proved an easier opponent: 19 shots yielded 5 goals.

Favorite sports role model
I look up to Florida quarterback, Tim Tebow. He's an amazing athlete, which was evident when he became the first sophomore to win the Heisman trophy. However, the thing I admire most about him is his ability to be well-rounded. He works as a Christian missionary with his parents in the Philippines, and even writes bible verses in his eye black on game days. He also values getting good grades and encourages teammates emphasizing, "It's important to play for something more than just the game, there has to be some greater purpose to what they do."

Who on the team makes you laugh?

I would have to say Kelly keeps me laughing the most. She always has little comments to add to every conversation to lighten the mood. I never know when to take her seriously, but there's never a dull moment that's for sure.

What do you like most about practices?

I always love coming together for our team huddle after practice. It's a constant reminder that we're more than a team; we're family. It makes all the sweat and hard work worth it.

Share a team gathering highlight?

The fake roadside creeper act we played on the new girls during kidnapping was classic. I have to admit, me pretending to be freaked out by a "roadside stop gone wrong" was my acting skills at their prime.

Best pump-up tune?

Definitely "Here comes the boom" by Nelly.

When it's time to celebrate after a game, where would you pick?

I would pick pretty much any restaurant with my family and friends. It's the perfect way to reflect on the game and have fun with the people I love.

Any superstitions or pre-game routines you believe in?

This year, I've sported the combination of baby blue and lime green prewrap in my hair each game. I also eat a pack of fruit snacks (preferably a Disney kind), and dance to Jock Jams or rock out to rap on the way to the game.

Highlight of the season thus far?
One of my favorite memories was our rave dance party with glow sticks the night of kidnapping. Haha enough said.

Most folks don't get the elite tickets to pasta feeds. Tell us, who wears the most spaghetti sauce on her face?
I would probably go with Alexa, she always ends up with food somewhere.

What's your earliest soccer memory?
I would say that my earliest memory of soccer was when I was in elementary school playing for you. I remember practicing on the gravel at Eastridge with Lex and having the best cheers, particularly for the Falcons.

What's your fondest high school soccer moment, either on-field or off?
This season will most likely be my fondest moment of high school soccer. The moment was when I scored a header goal against Southwest. It was pretty much my dream goal against our biggest rival.

You're a super competitor. Describe where you think that came from and how has it changed as your experience in and out of sports has grown.
I'm extremely competitive and a lot of it is due to having my brother. We are always competing for everything, whether it was in sports or not. It's also helped that I've played on so many competitive teams that won't settle for losing. I think as an athlete my competitiveness has definitely increased as I've gotten older, I just plain hate losing.

One of your favorite pump-up tunes?
I always seem to end up listening to something by T.I. or Lil' Wayne, but Bring Em Out is a ritual.

You've recently suffered a knock on the melon, we're sorry to know. But perhaps this is a good time to ask you to share one of your Mac (the trainer) moments.
Ha, there's a few. My most vivid moment would probably be my first neck slap for not signing in when I got there. I've never forgot since!

Favorite sports movie? (and why?)
I think I'll have to go with "Remember the Titans." I don't think anything will ever beat it.

In Blogland, readers are always begging for the 'inside story.' Can you shoot us an "in the bus", sideline, pre/post-game anecdote?
On gamedays, each player recieves a letter from Coach Mo. Each game the letter has a different theme and words of motivation, like quotes from well-known atheletes or people who have proven a point in history. We always enjoy reading them and it's a great way to help players mentally prepare themselves for the game. Also, we have a special cheer that Coach Mo leads before the start of every game that people get in to and always have fun with.

Other than Coach Mo, who or what motivates this team and how? Our coaches do a great job of motivating us, but I think the players do an awesome job as well. Everyone's been encouraging towards each other and haven't been afraid to push each other. We know we have each other's support and play for the team, which is a great motivator within itself.

Best part of pasta feeds so far?
The desserts are always something to look forward to. So far we've had things like cookie cakes and sundaes that get pretty decorated. And there's a few funny stories that always seem to be brought up, which never gets old.

What's your earliest soccer memory?
When I was first playing soccer you were young enough that you didn't really have any positions. I was always confused at first on where I was suppose to go, so I'd just follow people and run around. One time I got the ball and my coach told me to go to the goal and score, but I started dribbling the wrong way. I just dribbled as fast as I could and didn't hear anyone telling me to turn around, so I dribbled to our goal and shot it. Luckily, i missed. But I was bummed I didn't score at first.

World Cup in Lincoln, Nebraska? (Lincoln Journal Star 4/9/09) Can you see it at Memorial Stadium? Isn't that almost sacrilege for Husker fans? You vote: Yes/No of allowing the biggest sporting event in the world to come to Lincoln and why?
It would be awesome if World Come came to Lincoln! I know a lot of people would be excited about it and come from all over the area to watch. Even people that didn't know soccer that well would enjoy it. It would be a great way to spread soccer throughout town and get more interest in the sport.

The best part of being a senior on this team this year so far ...
I would say the best part of being a senior for me is just being on the team becuase of the team chemistry we have this year. It's been there in the past, but it seems like we're able to play more with each other and enjoy how we play together as a team moreso this year than in previous years. We work hard at practice, but we're also able to have fun at the same time. There's a good balance between our work ethic and being able to enjoy ourselves.

SR PROFILE: Olivia Lambdin: #12, defender

What's your impression of the season thus far?

OL: I think that this year has definitely been the best. Everybody is really close, and we constantly have fun -- while kicking some butt, of course.
What kind of mentality does it take to play defense the way you always have? You seem like such a sweetheart, and then ... boom!
OL: Whenever I play a game, I try to take on an aggressive mentality. Even though I am not exactly the tallest person on the team, I want to prove that my small stature does not mean I can't compete or play as a defender.

What's one of your favorite memories of your LEGS experience over the course of your high school career?
OL: One of my favorite memories of my LEGS experience, probably, has to be beating Southwest this year. The competition between our two schools is fierce and having the win really helped to boost our confidence as we strive towards state.

What's the new assistant coach Emily bringing to the table this year?

OL: To begin with, Emily was a senior during my freshman year. And having her come back is like having her bring back the legacy that LEGS enjoyed during her time (the back to back championships). She is giving our defense tremendous tips which, hopefully, we can utilize to help us climb to state and seek the success that she found during her LEGS experience.

If you were to pick an animal to represent this year's team, what would it be?

OL: I would probably have to choose a snake because it is hidden in its surroundings and is often overlooked. But when it attacks, it can be deadly.

The best post-game celebratory food treat?
OL: It definitely has to be cookie cake!

Bulldogs tamed in 1-0 scrap; East climbs to 3-1

Keeper Brittany Toth withstood six corner kicks, most in the second half facing the wind, to preserve the one-goal victory for East. Among 11 East shots on goal, Jamie Zillig found net in the first half after striking the ball over the out-stretched hands of the Burke keeper. Pictured from top: Amanda Olson prepares to strike; senior Nikki Roehrs (background) with Betsy McDonald maintain possession; Jamie Zillig dribbles upfield; and Kasey Hoppes breaks away. Westside outlasts LE, 1-0 (SO)

Only five shots on goal were recorded (2 for EAST, 3 for WHS) during the 100 minutes of soccer, and the Warriors won in the shoot-out. East had six corner kick opportunities but failed to find the net for the first time this season. Above, Stacy Herbel moves into position on defense, Amanda Olson and Kelly Howe attempt an attack, and goalkeeper Brittany Toth boots the ball into a cold wind.

'The fitter you are ..."

the harder it is to surrender."

That's how Coach Morgan begins his pre-season letter to players and parents. He warns against stitting back and waiting for someone to hand out a trophy, especially a state title trophy. Below is an excerpt of Morgan's letter.

"There are many reasons to be fit. A good fitness program aids in your endurance, thereby helping your quality of play. If you are aspiring to be on varsity, or are returning from last year, there is no greater advantage you can give yourself than to come in being in the best shape possible. The preseason
process and try-outs are tough and long, being in top condition can keep you going strong when others have wilted. One other reason for the conditioning is at the High School level, generally in April, we may play in excess of three games a week, with tournaments on the weekend.
Physical conditioning is definitely a deciding factor in soccer excellence and player success. Just as importantly is your mental game. There is little doubt that the heat of battle exposes a competitor's weakest points. If an athlete's personality is negative, she may turn against herself in a contest. Her hidden vulnerabilities become will apparent. Competition is connected to her image. A
physically strong, athletic competitor who works hard may look great in training; but in her game she may fade at the first sign of trouble. Her fighting spirit diminishes, and she looks helpless. Sheloses confidence. The composed and rational side of her personality suddenly vanishes. How mentally tough you are is an important question whose answer largely defines how successful you'll
be in competition You have a decision to make this year. You don’t have to be a world-class athlete to enjoy the game of soccer, but for you to participate on this team you must strive for the highest possible level, to your fullest capability, you must commit to fitness, mental as well as physical. On top of that, you must work on your technical and tactical game. That means working on your own, pushing yourself to better yourself."
